Exams Overview
The Passive House Network currently offers two professional PHI Passive House certification exams; the Certified Passive House Designer/Consultant exam and the Certified Passive House Tradesperson exam.

Certified Passive House Designer / Consultant
Who should consider taking the CPHD/C exam?

The exam is 3.5 hours and is live-online.
Registration in the CPHD/C exam also includes exam preparation activities. Exam preparations start about 5-6 weeks prior to the exam. The activities are:
- Practice Design Assignment (required)
- Trainer-led Review (optional)
- Tech setup (required)
To complete your registration for the PHI exam you will need a valid Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) license. The PHPP (and license) is included in our CPHD/C course registration.

The Designer or Consultant designation is awarded by PHI after passing the CPHD/C exam.
To receive the Designer designation:
- You must be an architect, engineer, or similar qualifying profession,
- AND submit academic transcripts, diploma, or license, indicating your professional background.
The Consultant designation is awarded to those professionals not within a qualifying profession. *Note: The CPHC abbreviation is not used for this designation due copyright issues.
After the CPHD/C exam, you will receive exam results directly from PHI in about 6-8 weeks.
The exam is difficult and we have a 87% passing rate with the new online format of this exam.

The leading reason for failing the exam is insufficient time to complete questions. Those individual retaking the online exam have all passed on their second attempts.

Who should consider taking the CPHT exam?

The CPHT live-online exam is 3 hours. The multiple choice exam is structured in into 3 parts.
- Passive House Basics
- Building Envelope
- Building Services
Passive House Basics is required by all exam participants.
Exam Participants can choose to take either the Building Envelopes, Building Services, or both sections.

The CPHT designation is awarded by PHI after passing the CPHT exam.
The designation will also indicate the specific area(s) passed within the exam; Building Envelope or Building Services, or both.
After taking the CPHT exam, PHI directly emails the results within about 4-5 weeks.

Things to Know
Course Completion Requirements
For PHN On-Demand courses all lessons, topics, and quizzes must be marked complete; any required webinars must be attended; AND the post-training survey must be completed.
For In-Person & Live-Online single day courses, 100% attendance is required to receive a course completion certificate.
For In-Person & Live-Online multi-day courses,no more than 2 hours can be missed to receive a course completion certificate.
Continuing Education Credits
Courses with continuing education credits (AIA or PHI) are noted in the course details section.
AIA credits for Live-Online and In-Person Courses will be reported to AIA by PHN if a participant provides their AIA number during registration. All other participants can use the certificate of completion to report continuing education credits either to AIA, or other agencies that recognize the AIA CE credits.
PHI credits are self-reporting. Find out a courses PHI course number. Report PHI credits.
Technical Requirements
Live-Online and On-Demand courses require a personal computer or laptop with a good internet connection speeds and audio listening capabilities. A web-camera is optional but preferred for Live-Online sessions. Preferred web browsers are Firefox, Chrome, or Chromium-based browsers.
In-Person courses do not require laptops or other devices, unless specifically mentioned. Although a laptop, or other note-taking equipment (pen and paper) are encouraged.
