NAPHN19 announces the pre-conference workshops for June 25-26, in New York City, leading up to the conference on June 27-28.

Check out more detailed descriptions here, click the title for more information.

The workshops allow for deep technical dives into the frontiers of low-energy Passive House design, construction and operation – this year with a particular focus on commercial and larger buildings.

From new university buildings, to large office buildings and multifamily retrofits, conference sessions will probe the frontiers of low-carbon building, design and operation. Emphasis is placed on the rapid scaling and implementation of low-carbon examples, to highlight how we are already able to “Build the World We Want.”

A core mission of the event is to demonstrate, investigate and discuss how professionals and policymakers are utilizing and implementing Passive House today – from fully certified buildings, to rethinking how they approach their work, utilizing Passive House methodologies, to make critical climate impacts.

With 11 half-day workshops focus on four major categories and offer deep dives into the following categories:

  1. Big, Tall and Challenging: These workshops will focus specifically on the challenges particular to large and potentially complicated buildings. They include
  • Taming the Big One’s: experts from Steven Winters Associates show you how to do take-off’s, modeling and lighting calcs for Passive House High-Rise buildings.
  • A Pattern Language for Large PH Buildings: A new design language is emerging from a host of large, multifamily Passive House projects. Let RDH’s specialized team use their experience to guide your own multi family designs.
  • Challenging PH Building Types: PHI’s own experts will share specific tools and tricks for buildings previously not considered good candidates for ‘high performance’: indoor swimming pools, supermarkets, hospitals. Take the challenge!
  1. MEP SPECIALTIES: Once the envelope is designed the details for mechanical, electrical and plumbing are often the most challenging particulars to get right. Find help with:
  • High Performance Hydronics: Larger projects present special opportunities to optimize cost and delivery of hot water and hydronic heating and cooling.
  • Plumbing & Mechanical Cores:  Gary Klein delivers expertise in how to use good design to lower cost and improve performance.
  1. TECHNICAL SPECIALTIES: Innovative solutions for all challenges can be overcome and these classes will provide specific guidance:
  • All Glass: Mastering Curtain Wall Glazing: PHI’s in-house specialist, Adrian Muskatowitz, will lead this session to share tips and tricks he’s seen used in commercial projects across the globe. Take this opportunity to learn from the source!
  • Commissioning & Monitoring: Learn specifics on what and how to ensure that your project stays on track with commissioning and monitoring.
  • RESET – Monitoring for IAQ: we’ve invited this supplemental standard to share their protocols that highlight IAQ benefits and help provide data and metrics we can use.
  • Timing is Everything: sequencing for Success Without Driving Sub-trades Mad: come home with useful information on how to structure your Passive House project to run smoothly and gain the most benefit for your clients.

NAPHN workshop attendees are professional architects, engineers, consultants and building owners that want to work at the leading edge of energy efficient buildings by increasing their expertise and knowledge network.
