Passive House Canada, with the support of the City of Vancouver, is seeking to hire an Engineer or Architect with demonstrated and internationally recognized expertise in large Passive House building design.
The position has two key functions: to support Passive House project design teams and to teach Passive House Design and Construction courses. It is anticipated approximately equal time will be spent on the two functions. As an advisor, the successful candidate will provide free and confidential guidance to design teams, including on complex Passive House projects, acting as a sounding board and technical advisor to support design teams. As an educator, the successful candidate will apply their technical expertise in assisting with curriculum development and the delivery of Passive House courses offered by Passive House Canada.
The position will be based in Vancouver and will report to the Passive House Canada Education Manager in relation to education and, initially, to the Passive House Canada CEO in relation to design team advice. The capacity to work with distributed staff, colleagues and volunteers is required. As such, an ability to communicate and engage with people is fundamental. Being part of the team in a rapidly developing organization will require adaptability and a solution oriented focus. The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience being innovative and taking initiative, possessing the ability to prioritize activities and work without supervision.
Professional registration in Canada and familiarity with Canadian building regulations is not required, but a passion for high performance sustainable buildings is a must!

Reporting to the CEO and working with staff and volunteers, the Operations Manager will support our growing organization by overseeing the day-to-day operation of the organization. The advance of building performance requirements across the country requires rapid expansion of organizational capacity and staffing. It is anticipated Passive House Canada will have offices and staff in several locations within a two years. Preparing the organization for and managing that growth is the core function of the Operations Manager.
The position is anticipated to evolve, initially requiring a broad range of responsibilities becoming more focused as additional staff is hired. The successful applicant will be comfortable working in QuickBooks entering data and preparing financial reports, be familiar with management accounting and facilitate our annual audit. The applicant will also be familiar with typical privacy, expense, HR and other policies and legal requirements and able to manage compliance. A demonstrated capacity to manage staff including those working in remote locations is required.
As a membership-based organization, service to our members is paramount. The Operations Manager is a key interface with our membership through direct contact in relation to membership, course, event and product inquiries. Our Board of Directors looks to the Operations Manager to support their work.
Additionally, the successful applicant will be required to purchase supplies and equipment, work with IT providers to ensure systems function properly, manage phone, internet and other contracts and be the liaison with property managers in relation to tenancy issues.
Although the position is located at our head office in Victoria, BC, our programs and services are delivered across the country. Being comfortable working with a distributed team is required. Proficiency in both French and English is an asset. An ability to engage with people and work in a rapidly developing environment is essential.
The successful applicant will demonstrate experience being innovative and taking initiative, and the ability to prioritize activities and work without supervision. Knowledge of the Passive House standard is not required but an interest in sustainable building and a passion for a greener future is a must!
